Energy efficiency service is a relatively new comer in the energy industry. And with increasing awareness in matters concerning the environment, its worth could prove to be the most valuable of all environmental initiatives, especially now that we feel the effects of our insatiable use of fossil fuel.
A leading player in the energy efficiency realm is Energy Industries Llc.
Conceptualization and Inception In 1994, Darren Kimura founded what was then called Energy Conservation and Management Hawaii at the age of 20, focusing on energy efficiency consultative work. Kimura was a student at Portland State University during this period but his academic priority did not stop him from achieving his entrepreneurial goal.
"What we were able to do at that time, we actually got a local Hawaii fax number, a local Hawaii cell phone and a pager number, and when I was at PSU, I was still actually doing consulting for companies in Hawaii without actually having them know that I was not in-state. What I would do is I would cut school for a couple of weeks, come back to Hawaii, do the consulting work, and then leave again."
One of the benefits he was able to bring to Hawaii from the mainland is the EPA Energy Star Program (you may have come across the Energy Star logo when you start your PC), a government-backed program where he had based the principles of his company.
"We were able to embrace a program called the EPA Energy Star Program very early on when it first came out, really in 1994. I actually got trained in Portland and then brought that back to Hawaii eventually and have been a big advocate of that program every since."
"Portland in and of itself is a very green state, very energy-efficient. It has adopted a lot of energy codes which are very progressive, so that kind of early beginnings really helped to make our company grow in the right directions early on when Hawaii was still only learning about energy efficiency."
A decade later, the company was renamed Energy Industries to encompass the different divisions it has formed over the years, including Pacific Energy Services (Pac-Energy), Electrical and Lighting Company, and eCONTROLS.
