Full circle describes the life of inventor, entrepreneur and investor John Davidson. Davidson attained his PhD at the University of Hawaii in computer science in a quest to become an inventor.
The company he later worked for, Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) created the ARPA Network which is the predecessor to today's internet. It was there that Davidson realized something that would change his life.
"I could connect to any computer that was on the [ARPA] network including computers in Hawaii and at California et cetera and in Europe. The computers I couldn't connect to were in our own basement."
BBN was not interested in solving this issue. This led Davidson to found Ungermann Bass which became the first company to provide local area networks (LAN). Ungermann Bass would later become a public company.
Davidson went on to a long history of success when he decided to spend more time in Hawaii and help the community. Davidson and other business leaders founded the Entrepreneur's Foundation of Hawaii (EFH). EFH asks companies to donate options or warrants on stock worth $50,000 or 2% of the company's valuation, whichever is less. The company gets a tax deduction upon liquidity and the money is then used for charitable giving. Hoku Scientfic is their first success with an IPO in 2005.
