Wally "Famous" Amos has been feeding the community for years, but not just with his scrumptious cookies.
Amos is famous not only for his chocolate chip cookies, but also for his advocacy in expanding literacy.
He put together the Read Aloud Foundation in Hawaii as a means of helping create a generation of well-read individuals.
"The whole focus behind Chip & Cookie is children's literacy, where we are using characters to help create awareness for reading aloud to children," Amos said. "Reading aloud is just the best way to get kids interested in reading."
The Chip & Cookie character dolls were created by Amos' wife, Catherine, 17 years ago. In 1975, Amos opened the Famous Amos Cookie Co., the "world's first store selling only gourmet chocolate chip cookies."
Amos has been a literacy advocate since 1979 and has received several honors and awards including the President's Award in Entrepreneurial Excellence, the Horatio Alger Awards and Outstanding Business Leader Award.
In November 2004, he was honored in the City and County of Honolulu's 100 people who have made enduring contributions to the city over the last 100 years.
