Since its inception 17 years ago, Roy's Restaurant has been engaging in youth-oriented programs designed to uplift the condition of Hawaii's children. Roy's sponsors a wide range of activities which have included potluck dinners, trips to the outer islands and free uniforms for youth sports teams.
"Nurturing your young is the most important factor as we do in our restaurants so when we see kids that come to our restaurants, we want to make sure that we take care of them," he said.
The restaurant has also lead fundraisers for children in need of medical assistance. Owner and Founding Chef of Roy's Restaurant, Roy Yamaguchi, believes providing for the youth is a critical factor in developing Hawaii's future.
"Giving to children is very important to me. When I see kids that have passion, when I see kids that really want to learn and they really want to grow I do whatever I can."
To further his efforts to support the youth, Yamaguchi established the Tom and Warren Masuta Scholarship Foundation which annually gives three individuals the chance to pursue their culinary dreams.
He said the foundation began as a memorial to Warren Masuda's contribution to the company.
Yamaguchi was the first Hawaii recipient to receive the James Beard Foundation Award given to individuals who advocate the practice and appreciation of America's culinary heritage.
