An educator's experience growing up became a compelling force to reach out to the community and join several non-profit organizations.
Joe Rice, President of Mid Pacific Institute has been an active member of different institutions including Queen's Health Systems, Girl Scouts of Hawaii, Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu, and Sunrise Rotary Club of Honolulu.
Rice said his active role in the community and his career as an educator were forms of reciprocating the help various people gave him as child. He uses his life experience as an example to children living in desolation and destitution.
"You start talking to them and you're trying to tell them something that will be meaningful to them and you can't reach them if your life has always been better than theirs," Rice said. "If you've never felt, seen, or done anything that they face today even here in Hawaii, you can't reach them. It just came out, and I share it with some of the kids. Many of them wrote to me afterwards and said 'Thank you, you've made a difference'."
He dreamt of becoming a social worker but his foreign language skills did not suffice to get him through.
Instead he graduated with a degree in education at the University of Washington. That started a journey that led him to become an inspiration to thousands of students who go to Mid Pacific Insitute.
Rice expanded the school's curriculum to encompass pre-school and primary from college preparatory levels during his first four years in office.
