Congressman Neil Abercrombie and the Friends of Father Damien has not only refurbished and preserved the Parish of St. Philomena, they have also restored the hopes of the 'last remnants'.
During Abercrombie's time with the association, they have raised money to re-construct Father Damien's Church and preserved his cause for Hansen's disease sufferers.
"It's not that a lot of people will ever go to the church; it's not that it's a great architectural monument, it's not that it will have an enormous historical importance as an architectural or as a church building," Abercrombie said. "But it had an enormous meaning in terms of what Father Damien did for human beings and what he meant to us in terms of giving a living lesson to us about reaching out to other human beings. I was very happy to be a part of the Friends of Father Damien group."
Other than the latter, Abercrombie has also been involved in a number of health and human rights-related organizations such as the Epilepsy Foundation, Life Foundation/AIDS Foundation of Hawaii and Amnesty International.
As an elected official, Abercrombie advises other public servants to do things according to its purpose, not to its supposed benefits to the doer.
He said one should not do things for gratitude's sake, but for it's own sake.
"If you're looking for accolades, if you're looking for admiration, if you're looking for gratitude, get a dog. The dog will love you without reservation," he said.
