Bert Kobayashi embodies an employer with a heart of gold.
Retired CEO of Albert Kobayashi Inc., the largest local construction company in Hawaii, Kobayashi goes an extra mile to support his employees who want to go on their own entrepreneurial road.
"There are some carpenters and supervisors who want to go on their own and I encourage them to do that," he said. "In fact we support them by sending letters to the contractor's license board. Plus when they get their license we give them some projects to do so they can get started."
"I'd say there were 10-15 companies that had started already on doing that," Kobayashi added. "And I know they can give quality, they are good employers, and the customers can be happy with their work; that's why we support them."
Besides the support he and his company give to their workers, Bert Kobayashi has also been a strong advocate of the construction industry. He became an officer of the Home Builder's Association which he considered as his way of reciprocating what he earned from the business.
"That was the first thing that I gave back to the industry," he said. "It was a learning experience for me because it's much different when you're working in a community group than doing everything and making decisions by yourself."
Kobayashi also got involved in fund-raising for churches and other non-profit organizations. He believes that being involved in the community has greatly improved his leadership and teamwork skills, which made him an effective businessman.
The Kobayashi Group is an active donor to The GIFT Foundation.
