"The cosmic dust that you borrowed from the universe, give it back in brighter coin than you received."

This stands as a personal mantra for president and CEO of PBS Hawaii, Mike McCartney-the line coming from a poem his father wrote when he was a child.

To McCartney, it means trying to give back more than what one has received.  He said whatever people do or whatever position they have, they can be of service in their own way, small or big.

"The challenge we have in our life is not how much money we make or what title we have, but I think you're defined by the things that you do," he added.

According to McCartney, in order for one to succeed he or she must be able to utilize the services of other people who could help meet one's objectives.

"Don't try to do it all.  Find some partner, find a team, find a people you love working with and do it together," he said.  "Even Rupert Murdoch, the head of a big network, can't do it by himself."

The ability to work with people is also one of McCartney's qualifications when looking at potential employees.  He said being a team player was an essential trait for their workers and being 'fit' to be in the workplace to do the organization a service was just as important.

And he acts as a role model when it comes to being of service.

"I think my purpose in my life is to be of service and my service is bringing people together to solve a problem," he said.  "So I think what I've homed in on is I bring people together, I like to put the right people together to solve problems."
