A local animal welfare organization recently earned over $4500 in sales through Great Harvest Bread Co.'s "Baker For A Day" community program. The bread company chose the Hawaii Dog Foundation as their benefactor for this year's hands-on project.

The annual event aims to provide an applied appoach to fundraising while establishing a dynamic relationship with customers who get to nominate worthy non-profit organizations as recipient of the charity program.

Adam Wong, owner of Hawaii's first Great Harvest Bread Co., said that volunteers from the foundation took over the management of the bakery for a day.

"Their volunteers came in over the course of a month to train with our staff. Then on a Sunday, they took over running our bakery for a day," Wong said. "They baked the bread, collected the money and ended up taking home more than $4500. We donated all the day's sales to their organization."

"This is an example of something we do to be a part and give back to our community," he added.

The event coincides with Wong's zero-dollar advertising policy wherein he and his employee joins community events to offer free bread samples whilst explaining the product and the company to the public.

"It's by far the best advertising that you can do," he said. "Bread in the mouth is better than purchasing advertising at any point in time."
