Thousands of disadvantaged children throughout the State of Hawaii receive educational assistance annually through Helping Hands.
CEO, Brian Schatz, says their program "Ready To Learn" provides school supplies packets to more than 9500 children in private and public school from the Big Island to Maui. In addition, his organization runs "Retired and Senior Citizens Volunteers Program" aimed at providing the elderly opportunities to help out the community through volunteerism.
"We have a lot of seniors who are done working for money but they are not done being productive in the community," he said. "And so we have 750 seniors who work in hospitals, museums, and other not-for-profits making the world continue to work."
Prior to entering politics, Schatz already had a broad experience in non-profit undertakings. He started with Youth for Environmental Service, where young people got involved in environment-based community service. According to Schatz, the organization acts as a tool for the youth to get themselves active in protecting the environment.
"Youth for Environmental Service was really designed to give young people and opportunity to do something about the environmental problems they saw," he said.
Unexpectingly, the organization grew beyond the founders' imagination and it eventually became a regional non-profit organization which involved thousands and thousands of kids every year.
