For the chairman and CEO of Island Insurance Company, Ltd., Colbert Matsumoto, the best way to instill a sense of community involvement to children is through leading by example.
Matsumoto, who actively engages in fund-raising for several non-profit organizations, believes that children seeing adults engage in philanthropy greatly influences them to do the same.
"My wife and I, we volunteer at different things and we bring our kids along so they see us, to the extent that they're able to help and get them involved in helping," he said. "For this type of activity, there is no better way to teach or transmit the importance of it than by example."
"Because you can tell kids, 'Oh yeah it's important to share and volunteer'," the father of two added. "But the best lesson for them is to see people that are close to them get their hands dirty and getting involved in these kinds of things."
Growing up in a plantation community in Lanai, Matsumoto carried with him the values of social giving he has seen from his parents.
"I was raised in a family where my parents were also very community-minded. As a consequence I just felt that this is something that you do in life, to give back," he said.
Matsumoto received JACL's Outstanding Community Service Award in 2004 for his leadership in connection with the $9 million campaign to save the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii from foreclosure.
