Venture capitalist, Danny Lui, expresses his gratitude to the people who have helped him get through a difficult childhood by paying forward the good deeds he received.
According to Lui, being a VC has enabled him to offer more time to be actively involved in the community as opposed to running a business which was a 24/7 job. Lui hands scholarships to students in the Chinese rural countryside. He said, coming from a working class family himself, it is education that is mostly appreciated by the disadvantaged.
"Since I'm from a working class family I know what's most appreciated by them," Lui said. "If I can give them education in China, students in the rural countryside, if I can donate a couple of scholarships, it won't cost us much each year."
"But each time we receive post cards saying that they're excelling and doing really good, it makes us feel really good that we're contributing," he added. Lui also gives his time as an advisor to different boards in Hong Kong and donates money to Chinese organizations hosting training seminars, all these relating to technological development in China and the territory.
Danny Lui became successful by following his love and passion for computers and technology, and this forms the fundamentals of his philosophy which he conveys to the younger generation.
"I see a lot of new graduates they always talk about which jobs have the best pay, not which jobs are meaningful or where they're passionate about." "Work hard and try your best; be passionate," he said. "Don't just go for the money."
