For the state director of Hawaii SBDC Network, Darryl Mleynek, social responsibility starts in the individual's immediate priority-work and family.  Mleynek said, to entrepreneurs, the term encompasses care for employees, something that most disregard as social responsibility.

"Social responsibility to me means first of all you begin with where you're at and you begin with your own family and you kind of move out from there.  It's an ever expanding circle," he said. "It includes things that people don't normally think about in terms of social responsibility, for instance how you treat your own employees.

He added that the employees were an essential part of the company and should be able to have a say on management decisions.

"There are very practical reasons why employees should be included in the decision-making because they dedicate their lives to their companies," he said.

As head of the State's premier small business consulting and training organization Darryl Mleynek said lack of direction poses as a growth limitation to small businesses.

"One of the ways that businesses often limit themselves is simply by not thinking in terms of where they want to be at some distant point,"  he said.  "So they don't develop a strategy, and if you don't implement a strategy you don't get there."

The Hawaii SBDC Network holds a track record of proven effectiveness in providing business assistance to entrepreneurs.  The organization offers a variety of in-class workshops, seminars and online training, and provides free and confidential one-on-one counseling by qualified business professionals.
