David Carey has been a key advocate in changing Hawaii's education system for the better.
As President and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises, he was instrumental in implementing Hawaii's Act 51 -- or The Reinventing Education Act of 2004, which reforms the public school system. He was chair of an executive committee made up of business leaders of the largest corporations in the State, and Carey was able to garner support for the education bill's systematic changes from the most influential leaders in the community.
These community leaders are most able to "move the needle to make education better," said Carey. It was no small task getting them all together and behind the same cause, but it went a long way to changing education.
"It provides a personal level of moral satisfaction and it also makes a difference because generally people that run companies are knowledgeable, smart, capable," he said. "And so those are the kinds of people that I believe should apply their talents to make all of our lives better."
Besides his active involvement in the education department, David Carey is also a tireless promoter of tourism in Hawaii, believing that as the State's main industry, it assists in shaping the economic environment of the Islands.
Carey was recently honored as PBN Business Leader of the Year for 2006.
