Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona has a passion for basketball.  And he loves the game so much that even with the rigid schedules of a politician, he still dedicates some of his time in coaching high school basketball.

His predilection to the sport goes way back in his early days.

"I've played it since I was a little boy. I think I first played basketball when I was in the fifth grade and I've never stopped loving the sport," Lt. Gov. Aiona said.  "I quit playing a while back but I've been involved with it either in coaching or as a spectator with my son watching them play or just watching it on television. I just love the game so much."

His involvement in coaching corresponds with another of his passion, education.
Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona spends a significant amount of time in schools giving his share in educating the youth-reading books to first graders and most importantly, teaching elementary and high school students about the dangers of illegal substance and underage drinking.

He believes that a myriad of family and individual problems stem from drug and alcohol addiction and that something should be done to curb the crisis.  One of the ways is to get young individuals involved in sports and keep them away from the negativities of idleness.

Serving as the first judge of the highly praised, innovative Drug Court remains as one of Lieutenant Governor Aiona's most fulfilling achievements.
