"We're here for a while on earth, make the best of that."
John Otterson lives to this idea and brings passion to all his activities-may it be in his career, family or community involvement. Managing director of SVB Capital, Otterson believes that doing things wholeheartedly releases the true potential of the person.
"Do something that you're passionate about," he said. "Do what you like to do. Don't do something for the sake of doing it because it's just what you've stumbled across."
"Think about what drives you so you can tap your passion, that's a tremendous source of energy. So whether that's in your professional life or your giving-back life, I think that's very important," Otterson added.
He founded the the USCD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational in August 1994 exemplifying his drive and passion for community involvement. To date, the event has raised over $2 million for the Rebecca and John Moore's USCD Cancer.
Otterson also engages actively in Project Concern, which focuses on uplifting and maintaining a viable standard of living amongst millions of children and families around the world.
Career-wise, Otterson has been with the Silicon Valley Bank for 17 years and currently works for SVB Capital, the private equity arm of the organization. He said his involvement in the investment industry was sparked by his familiarization with entrepreneurship and start-up companies since childhood.
His early experience in business has brought him to believe that capital is not the means to an end.
"Money isn't what makes companies fly, it's really the team of people that's around it."
