Rick Blangiardi recognizes the underlying power of coaching. Blangiardi started his career as an assistant football coach for the University of Hawaii but had to shift professions to support his family.
Now the general manager of KGMB Channel 9, Rick Blangiardi still believes that coaching or mentorship is essential in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and he enacts this principle in the corporate world, away from the sports stadium.
According to Blangiardi, he motivates his employees, especially those who "have their best in front of them", the same way he would his players on the field.
"I'm a strong believer in servant leadership, being a facilitator. I require that of my managers," he said. "It's not a bottom-up kind of a deal. If you're going to try to inspire performance, you've got to have good coaches, people who inspire other people."
He said enhancing the employees' writing, selling and communication skills as well as other skill sets needed in television is no different than teaching athletes the various skill sets to effectively play a sport. Obviously, the context is different but the fundamental needs are similar.
"You challenge them and you do things to help them develop. That for me is no different than taking the field with your team and preparing them to beat their opponent mentally and physically," he said.
Blangiardi applies the same principle although takes a different approach when it comes to parenthood.
He lives by the statement: "If we raised the children that we were given, instead of the children that we wanted them to be, there would be no need for psychiatry."
