Sony Corporation recently announced that they would extend their title sponsorship of Sony Open in Hawaii to 2010, guaranteeing that more and more of the disadvantaged would benefit from the charitable cause of the sporting event.  The Japanese firm has worked with the Friends of Hawaii Charities on this annual fundraising event since the latter's inception in 1998.

According to Anthony Guerrero, president of Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc., the not-for-profit organization has reached a milestone of distributing $1 million to local charities this year.  Total grant distributions run to over $6 million, which would not be made possible without Sony's philanthropic involvement.

"Sony Corporation's commitment to extend its title sponsorship of the Sony Open in Hawaii to 2010 makes Hawaii's not-for-profit organizations the biggest winners of all," said Mr. Guerrero.  "We are grateful for their continued commitment to Hawaii through Friends of Hawaii Charities."

One of the world's grandest golf tournaments, the Sony Open in Hawaii has grown into the largest charity-sporting event in the Hawaiian Islands.  This, along with sports marketing and tourism advertising, is just one of the benefits that Sony's corporate sponsorship of the event brings to the local community.

A multinational corporation exercising responsible corporate citizenship

President of Sony Hawaii Company, Don Kim, said that being a transnational business, Sony should lead in the implementation of responsible corporate citizenship and raising funds for charities was a good example of enacting this initiative.

"I think Sony is a global company, and the corporate policy is also that we've got to be a good corporate citizen in every country," Kim said.  "So, that's very important, that we keep the culture of the Sony Corporation."

Don Kim himself is an active community volunteer which ostensibly started when he joined the Korean military in 1963.  Here, he learned the values of discipline and teamwork which he said was useful in his rise in the corporate ladder.  As for his current community involvement, Don has been assisting as a deacon in Agape M. Baptist Church since 1985.  He is also on the boards of East-West Center Foundation and Hawaii Baptist Academy, and is an executive committee member of the Friends of Hawaii Charities

In May 1996, Don received the Award of Peony from GCS International Club for his unrelenting support to the orgnization's cause.  He became president of GCS International Hawaii in 2004.
