"When you drink water, remember the source." These simple words may have kept City Mill running for over a century, making it one of the oldest and most successful businesses in the State.
The saying entails that one's success is not possible without help from others. In business, it is through the community that makes a company blossom. According to President and CEO, Steven Ai, the chinese proverb is City Mill's business principle that has been passed down from generation to generation.
"Our success, whether it's personal, whether it's through the business, comes back through the community," he said. "We have to remember because most of City Mill's success over the last 107 years has been because the community has supported us, so we give back to the community because our success is due to the community support."
Their community involvement is reflected even at the gravest of circumstances. One such example was when City Mill stayed open to the public as hurricanes Iva and Iniki pounded the islands in 1982 and 1992 respectively. Steven said they also supplied materials to those left homeless by the devastation.
In 2004, the company was awarded the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award by the Hawaii Psychological Association. In the same year, Steven and Kara were honored the Retailer of the Year and Retail Business of the Year awards by the Retail Merchants of Hawaii.
