Of all the awards and medals that he received throughout his military career, Brigadier General Steven Hummer considers his Military Outstanding Volunteer Service commendation as the most valuable. Brig. Gen. Hummer received the honor as an assistant scout leader for the Boy Scouts where his son was a trooper.
Being a generous nation where there are more aid contributors and more volunteers than any other country in the world, it is a mission of the US military, especially their leaders, to uphold the values of volunteerism inscribed in their culture.
"I think our country has really shown themselves as being a giving country," Brig, Gen. Hummer said. "Certainly that is (community service) something that we would recommend and help support marines to do."
Assuming his current assignment as commanding general of the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in September 2005, Brig. Gen. Hummer now holds under his leadership more than 70,000 marines or roughly 2/3 of the operational force of the marine corps. At one direct order, these personnel can be deployed in the battlefield, but more importantly, they can be directed to assist in humanitarian aid and disaster relief. The role that Brig. Gen. Steven Hummer plays in the military makes him an invaluable asset not only to the defense of the nation but also to the growth and development of the local Hawaiian community.
