David Cole, president and CEO of Maui Land & Pineapple, puts in mind that community involvement is an integral part of business.  He believes that the more one knows about the community, the better informed he/she is as a business person.  According to David, the business sector and the community works within a mutualistic relationship as they draw nourishment from each other.

"There's no membrane that says the company stops here and the community starts there," David said.  "It's all part and parcel to the same thing, we're in this together."

Under David's leadership, Maui Land & Pineapple has worked to address the lack of affordable housing which eventually led to the provision of 450 affordable homes on Maui.  David has also been an active conservationist for 20 years.  He has joined several environment-based organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and the American Farmland Trust as director.

David also helps bring Maui Land and Pineapple on a turnaround - going from continuing losses and over $50 million in debt when he was tapped to lead the company in 2003, to a healthy balance sheet and improving prospects in every business segment.   He has stated that the company will be profitable across all three divisions - agriculture, development and resort operations in 2007.
