David Watumull carries a meaningful undertaking. As CEO of Hawaii Biotech, he is on the lead to finding cures to many of the world's deadliest diseases, including Dengue and West Nile viruses. This makes the biopharmaceutical firm's social mission deeply ingrained in to their corporate goals.
But according to David, their success can not be made possible without the support of the community and the government. Community effort runs the biotech indsutry in Hawaii fueled by the support of the government through funding and refundable tax credits.
David claims that Hawaii Biotech is on the forefront in developing vaccines which can potentially save millions of lives, made possible by the favorable business and social environment in the State.
"While a lot of places are also putting other resources into their own biotech industries, we can do something substantial here in Hawaii as well," he said. "We have as good an opportunity as almost any other place that does not have a major biotech hub right now."
"It's because people choose quality of life and we have a good quality of life here in Hawaii," David added. "We also have the commitment of the State government and the legislature that have helped to put together some of the pieces here."
David Watumull joined Hawaii Biotech in February 2001. He became CEO by the end of the year. He is co-inventor on 19 Hawaii Biotech patent applications and has raised nearly $50 million, through a combination of investor financing and grant funding, for the Company.
