Everytime there was a major budget cut in the State, it would always be the Arts to be put in distress first. But Gail Hannemann, CEO of the Girl Scouts Council of Hawaii, saw the need for the Arts in the development of a vibrant and healthy community. This brought her to chair the Hawaii Alliance for Arts, the only one of its kind in the State that supports and advocates the arts.
Gail believes that a lot can be learned from its various facets which can also prove useful in ones professional career. The skills that one learns when trying to hear notes and figuring out the harmony are the same skills that a career person uses in business transactions, according to Gail.
"We're all human beings and the arts and the culture really speak to that part of the human being," she said. "And I know from my side when I look at it, some of the things that I learned in the arts really help me in professional experiences today."
"For example, I learned my fractions by studying music cause it's all about counting measures and bars and notes," Gail added. One of the alliance's major projects is the redevelopment of Chinatown. With grants from the Ford Foundation, this endeavor can bring about a major cultural renaissance in the area.
