Retired Navy Captain Jerry Coffee made good and productive use of a life-changing experience, in the process inspiring thousands of people across America and around the world to be better citizens.  Captain Coffee endured more than seven years of incarceration  under communist North Vietnam.

He searched for a purpose in his life during those tumulutous years.  Serendipitally, he found it after his release.

"I came home, and felt a very strong responsibility to capitalize on the credibility that accrued from that experience, from that survival," Captain Coffee said.  "And the vehicle for capitalizing on it became professional speaking, spreading that message; and basically it's as simple as trying to plant the seed of belief in people's minds that had it somehow been you, or them you would have survived for the very same reasons that I did, because look, there's nothing extraordinary about me, really."

One of the things that Capt. Coffee spoke fondly of was how he and his comrades communicated which helped them survive the ordeal.  Paradoxically, in today's world, advances in communication technology makes interaction more and more impersonal, according to him.

Captain Jerry Coffee holds the National Speaker's Association's highest rating of CSP and membership in the Speaker's Hall of Fame (CPAE).
