FIRST! That's the word that best describes Mufi Hanneman. Hanneman is the first person of Samoan descent to serve on the City Council and as Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu. This year marks another first for Hanneman. It earmarks the first time that Chinese New Year will be a collaboration between all major Chinatown organizations. A symbol of this will be the commemorative buttons and ribbons that are available at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for a $5 donation. The buttons offer discounts at participating businesses.
"This administration has said many times before that we plan to emphasize the revitalization of Chinatown. We want to make it a special arts and culture center and I see this as a launching point for many of the things that you will see in 2006 and beyond," says Hanneman.
The Mayor also credits a group of University of Hawaii Executive MBA students with that recognized the need for a concerted effort more than a year ago. Through the efforts of Kim Yuen, Lee Amodo, Tom Presler, as well as the Chinese Organizations and the City, we will have an event to remember.
