It is a natural tendency for parents to provide for their children, to give them material needs, and to teach them the ways of the world. However, it is equally important for children to have their "football coach", as Nate Smith, president of Oceanic Time Warner, speaks of broadly.
According to Nate, child-rearing is not all about making life easy for the kids. He believes that it is crucial to merely instill in them the right know-how so they can get through the obstacles along their way.
"The desire to give them things and always make things smooth for them is actually leading them down the wrong path because life isn't fair," he said. "There are a lot of hard knocks, and if you pave the way for them you've done them a real disservice."
Nate said that the most important values that a parent can teach their children are self-reliance and a sense of reponsibility for their own actions.
Coincidentally, this concept of accountability, according to Nate, is slowly becoming the operating norm for many non-profit organizations.
Speaking on behalf of Aloha United Way, Nate said that the organization slowly standardized accountability where they showed donors where and how their donations were put to use, allowing for an effective dissemination of resources.
